Safety first!
A holiday in Florida is often a holiday of a lifetime - and we all want to go home not just with our holiday photos - but also with fantastic memories that will stay with us for many years to come.
There are a few simple tips to remember when holidaying in another country - and as a quick reminder here are a few to help ensure that your memories of Florida are good ones!
DRIVING It can take a while to get used to driving on 'the wrong side of the road'. Take it slowly and you'll be fine! Take extra care at junctions - particularly when turning across the traffic. Remember at a T junction that the traffic will be approaching you on the 'wrong side of the road'. On the plus side - driving an automatic is so easy - at least you don’t have to worry abouut changing gear!
PEDESTRIANS Floridians just don't walk anywhere! There are very few pavements (sidewalks) - but if you do decide to walk - don't forget when you cross a road look both ways very carefully - the traffic will be approaching from the left rather than the right.
SAFE AREAS Most parts of Florida are very safe to be in and the crime rate is actually very low.
WILDLIFE It is actually an offence to feed wildlife in Florida! it is hrd to understand why those lovely long-legged birds (sand-cranes) that are so tame and will walk right up to you expecting to be fed must be ignored! However, when it comes to alligators - the reason why you mustn't feed them is more obvious! Alligators are apparently frightened of humans - but probably best not to test that theory! If you feed an alligator it starts to associate humans and food - with obvious dangers! They say that there is a 'gator in ever piece of water in Florida - and so the chance of an accident is very slim indeed - but nevertheless - use your common sense.
SICKNESS Don't forget you holiday insurance! Medical care in Florida is extremely expensive! If you are unlucky enough to be taken ill on holiday then the walk-in medical centres/clinics are the equivalent of the UK GP. For minor medical problems however, why not try the local pharmacy, where you can have a consultation with the pharmacist about most minor illnesses.
SUNBURN Don't underestimate the power of the sun - particularly on young children. Use a high factor sun cream and remember to reapply throughout the day.
DEHYDRATION Drink plenty of water. Buy bottled water in the supermarket and freeze it in the freezer before going out for the day. You will then have ice cold water to quench your thirst and keep you hydrated.
The final tip.....ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY!
